The Tusome Early Grade Literacy Programme aimed at improving literacy outcomes for Class 1, 2 and 3 pupils. The project was implemented in all the 23,000+ public primary schools in Kenya and additional 1,000 Alternative Provider of Basic Education and Training (APBET) institutions in non-formal settlements in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret and Nakuru counties.

The project reached 140,000 thousand  Kenyan children.

The Tusome program materials provided daily activities in phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and writing

The approach to Tusome adpted a  unique model of training, where regional and national trainers provided modeling and practice opportunities for TAC tutors and instructional coaches, and those TAC tutors and instructional coaches provided opportunities for teachers. The Tusome program utilized frequent and ongoing structured feedback from the TAC tutors and instructional coaches in each zone or cluster as they visited the classrooms of teachers.
