I Choose Life- Africa – Africa (ICL) in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), and SoS Children Villages (SoSCV) are implementing an innovative Girls’ Education Challenge program in three counties in Kenya; Laikipia, Meru and Mombasa dubbed Jielimishe GEC Project.
This project is funded by the UK government through Department for International Development (DfID) under the Girls Education Challenge Project. The project is addressing five key challenges affecting education outcomes for marginalized girls’; enrolment, attendance and learning.
These challenges are:a) cultural barriers
The project’s five outputs and objectives are:1. To strengthen target communities to develop mechanisms that encourage girls to attend and stay in school
The project covers 60 schools as intervention (project schools) and 20 schools as comparison spread throughout the three counties. Of the 60 project schools (40 are secondary schools and 20 are primary schools). The schools are divided as follows: 20 secondary schools in Mombasa, 10 secondary schools in Meru and 10 secondary schools in Laikipia, whereas Meru and Laikipia has 10 primary schools each.

As the external evaluator, WERK conducts termly spot checks in the 60 project schools and 20 comparison schools for attendance data. There are also regular visits to the project sites and discussions with project teams on the improvement of project delivery. As the evaluation consultant, WERK conducted the baseline study and recently concluded the midline evaluation.
To achieve the above stated goals, WERK has been working with in partnership with likeminded organizations with a view to having a vibrant and community of practice. The core team is made up of the following organizations:
